Slovakia is in Central Europe and borders the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. The largest city and the capital is Bratislava. Slovakia became independent on 1 January 1993, with the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia. The landscape is mostly mountainous, with the Carpathian and Tatra mountains.
