Lincoln’s Inn Receives Greengage ECOsmart Certification

Published: 21 Oct 2025

The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, one of London’s most historic and architecturally striking event venues, has unveiled a bold sustainability programme that demonstrates how heritage and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Sustainability Rooted in Tradition

Despite its Grade I and II listed buildings, Lincoln’s Inn has made remarkable strides in reducing its environmental footprint. The estate’s sophisticated building management system maximises natural light and minimises energy use, while a ground-source heat pump beneath the modern Ashworth Centre provides renewable heating and cooling, significantly cutting CO2 emissions.

Energy-efficient LED lighting, dayligt sensors, and automatic occupancy detection further ensure energy efficiency throughout the venue’s mix of historic and contemporary spaces. Beyond the buildings, new tree planting and meadow grass areas have been introduced to encourage biodiversity across the Inn’s extensive grounds.

Catering with a Conscience

Lincoln’s Inn’s catering team leads by example. The kitchens operate entirely on high-efficiency electric and induction equipment, and the on-site Kitchen Garden supplies fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from the grounds to the plate. The venue’s procurement policy champions local and ethical sourcing—from British Red Tractor-certified milk and home-reared meats to fair-trade Peruvian coffee that donates 10% of profits to clean-water charities. Even used cooking oil is collected and converted into biofuel, completing a fully circular system.

Zero Waste Commitment

Not a single item of waste from Lincoln’s Inn goes to landfill. Recyclables are separated at source, non-recyclables are baled for refuse-derived fuel, and all food waste is transformed via the site’s Ridan Food Waste Composter into nutrient-rich compost for the gardens. The results speak volumes: almost 20 million litres of waste are diverted from landfill annually—the equivalent of eight Olympic swimming pools.

People and Purpose

Lincoln’s Inn’s green mission extends beyond infrastructure. The venue’s Green Team leads internal initiatives, while staff receive reusable coffee cups to reduce disposables and participate in volunteer gardening programmes to help harvest produce from the estate. Apprenticeships and partnerships with local colleges also ensure the next generation of hospitality professionals gain hands-on experience in sustainable practice.

A Responsible Choice for Event Planners

By booking at Lincoln’s Inn, organisers can deliver memorable, high-impact events without compromising on environmental principles. Whether hosting a gala dinner, a modern conference, or a summer party, clients can enjoy premium service with the peace of mind that their event supports a greener future.

“We’re proud to show that even a venue with centuries of history can be forward-thinking when it comes to protecting the planet,” says Chary Wilson, Head of Sales & Events at Lincoln’s Inn.
