Immersive Outdoor Learning, Elevated
Set in the dramatic backdrop of the Peak District near Matlock, the not-for-profit Mount Cook Adventure Centre (opened in July 2016) offers a fresh generation of outdoor education with its latest 3- and 5-day bushcraft training courses, now delivered in partnership with the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL).
The centre’s mission has always been to “open minds … push boundaries … provide access to the outdoors for all.” With these new bushcraft programmes, that mission expands from team building and school residentials into professional-level instruction and independent outdoor competence.

Why These Courses Are Different
While many outdoor centres run short one-day activity sessions, Mount Cook’s new offering takes participants deeper into the wild craft of nature-living, survival technique and instructor-level competence. As the centre itself puts it:
“In a world filled with screens, schedules and noise, there’s something deeply refreshing about stepping into the woods and rediscovering the skills that once came naturally to us all.”
Key differentiators:
- Accredited Pathways: The courses provide training towards IOL Level 3 Bushcraft Competency Awards and Certificates.
- Duration & Depth: Available over 3 or 5 days, significantly more immersive than typical day courses.
- Practical, Hands-on Learning: From using edged tools and tarps to natural navigation, cordage making and campfire cooking.
- Inclusive, Respectful Ethos: Learning not just do, but understand—working with nature, not simply being in it.
- Accommodation & Location: Set within a converted quarry environment, with dedicated bushcraft zones and glamping style lodgings.
