A Wedding Venue Steeped in History

Published: 12 Aug 2020

Tread the Marriage Path of Kings and Queens

Oatlands Park, the venue where King Henry VIII married Catherine Howard in 1504.

Originally, the site of a grand Royal Tudor Palace, the Oatlands Estate in Surrey has been home to the Kings and Queens of England. They played host to Emperors and Earls, and immortalised in both prose and paint throughout the centuries.

The magnificent grounds were originally the site of the royal palace of Oatlands, commissioned to be built by Henry VIII in 1538. Monarchs, including Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I also resided at Oatlands during their reign. Over the centuries, the house and grounds have been rebuilt and remodeled several times, and in different styles, by a string of wealthy tenants.

Henry VIII erected the palace for his new Queen, Anne of Cleves. Although a worthy rival to his other riverside house at Hampton Court. The imposing red brick building with its gateways, octagonal towers and open courts at Oatlands was only visited occasionally by the King. The intended resident, Anne, probably never lived there during the short time she was his wife, but it is thought Henry secretly married his next Queen, Anne’s young lady-in-waiting, Catherine Howard, in the palace chapel.

Oatlands Park opened as a hotel for the first time in 1856. The South Western Hotel, as it was known then, played host to a number of world-famous guests including writer Emile Zola, novelist Anthony Trollope and artist and poet Edward Lear. The current owners bought the hotel in 1986 and have lovingly restored and refurbished it, retaining the unique character of the listed buildings and grounds.

Couples can follow in Tudor royalty footsteps in the newly refurbished, luxury 4-star hotel in Weybridge, Surrey. Set amidst the splendor of manicured gardens, the hotel offers the best of breathtaking scenery over the Surrey countryside and fine facilities. After undergoing a multi-million-pound refurbishment, the venue has an incredible range of impressive event spaces available to host that special day, from small & intimate affairs to the large cultural weddings.

Overlooking the Broadwater lake and with far reaching views over the Surrey countryside, Oatlands Park Hotel stands within 10 acres of parkland, offering the perfect setting for both ceremonies and receptions. The stunning views present gorgeous photography opportunities and the gardens allow an ideal space to entertain wedding guests in the summer.
