Work has begun on a £15 million development project at one of the north of England’s most prestigious, luxury hotels.
Building has commenced at
The Grand Hotel & Spa in York – Yorkshire’s only 5-star hotel – that will see the award-winning venue double its number of guest rooms and open a brand new 140-seater restaurant.
Plans for the enhancements, which were submitted by the hotel’s owners,
Splendid Hospitality Group, and approved by the
City of York Council at the end of 2015, will see the Grade II listed building connected to the adjacent Roman House, creating over 100 additional bedrooms along with new spaces for meetings and corporate hospitality.
A new restaurant will be housed
on what was formerly a terrace area.
Existing guest rooms will all be refurbished and the Spa will be enlarged with the creation of additional treatment rooms.
Phase I will see the opening of the new restaurant by early 2017, with the new bedrooms being completed shortly after. The current 107 guest rooms will be remodelled during 2017.
The scale of the development of
The Grand demonstrates
Splendid Hospitality Group’s dedication to the City of York, where it also has two other hotels –
Hotel Indigo and the
Holiday Inn Express. It is also a clear indication of the Group’s continued investment in this already exceptional hotel, which has won many plaudits and awards since opening in May 2010.
Leading the work is Keighley-based
RN Wooler & Co Ltd, alongside architects
McKenzie Wheeler.
McKenzie Wheeler return to
The Grand following their key role in the original conversion of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters.
The team is completed
Arcacia Consulting, Consarc Design Group, Twenty2 Degrees Design Partnership, Phillips Page Associates, and
Walsh.
The Grand’s management and all of the contractors are going to great lengths to ensure that there is minimum disruption during the work, which will take standards of comfort, luxury and guest experiences to a whole new level.
