The School Games is a multi-sport event that will be taking place from 3-6 September 2015, with around 1600 of the nation’s finest young sports stars set to compete. The School Games have a strong track record of providing a springboard for young athletes who then go on to compete at a national level, with many of the acclaimed London 2012 GB athletes having been a part of the Games previously.
Eight venues will host different sporting events as part of the Games including the National Cycling Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre, with Birley set to become an Athlete’s Village using the fantastic new facilities.
Youth Sport Trust Head of Sport Will Roberts also praised MMU, saying: “The University is the perfect location to provide a first class Athletes' Village experience for all competing at the School Games. We are delighted to be working with MMU; their facilities offer inspirational surroundings for all the athletes to both prepare and relax for this world class event.”
Head of Conference Services at MMU, Janet Scull, remarked that the School Games sought to find a “motivational setting” to support the event, and added: “we are delighted that Birley has been chosen as an essential component in helping encourage the athletes’ success later this summer”.
Approximately 700 coaches, support staff and volunteers will be working alongside the 1600 competitors, and with Manchester being the chosen city to host the Games once again, MMU will no doubt play an integral part of this major sporting championship.
